A classic approach to garnishes is to be able to interact with them. Orange wedges and olives are great because they are edible. Springs of herbs are great because they smell fantastic (especially tucked in neatly next to your straw).
Whatever the case, try to add something you can touch and feel. Play with your food (and drink), it is a lot more fun.
